I live with my husband and two boys (now 2 and 4) in Harrison, NY. I've been sewing for at least 30 years. I started with embroidery and counted cross stitch and tried out my mother's old White console machine when I was around 7. In high school, I sewed my bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding and of course my prom dresses.
I have completed numerous projects through the years but I think I finally found my passion for sewing while serving in the US Peace Corps in The Gambia from 2005-2007. I fell in love with the colorful wax print fabric found everywhere there and even bought my own Singer Butterfly treddle (non-electric) machine for my little home. I volunteered at the women's skill center in my village where I taught math and helped with their other skills like sewing, crafts, tie dye and English.
When my service was over, my husband (whom I met in the Peace Corps) and I moved to New York City. My husband's gracious Aunt Janet gave me her sewing machine that she never used and I just couldn't wait to use it. I had made many many boho bags while in The Gambia and gave it a go here in the States. I drafted my very first clothing pattern for myself and made the sweetest skirt. As a treat to myself, I took my first quilting class at Purl Soho and never looked back. I thought I'd stick just with quilting but then I discovered pdf patterns.
